John Cage

I found the video "oneII " 103 to be terribly boring with the exception of the two uncontrolled human coughs in the background. I do not share Cage's spiritual conquest for the "emptying out of" self or humanity. Contrary to Cage, I am bound to character and narrative. The film disappointed my expectations. I rather enjoyed "433", an experimental piano concert conducted in Harvard Yard. It was the audience's hostile reactions.

The documentary is a bit more interesting.

What Is Digital Cinema

Does digital cinema go to far?

I find myself overtly frustrated with the visual and special effects of Hollywood blockbusters and television. Personally, I did not enjoy the Bad Religion video shown in class on Tuesday. I hope "visual artists" are not responsible. Money and technology are to blame, right? Like thousands of others, I go flocking to the newest low budget independent films to engage myself with what seems to be a more authentic view of life. I should rephrase that. I am obsessed with how props and absurd elements juxtapose real-life video footage of people, dialogue, locations, and events. I like the idea of raw material, before it hits this monster of manipulation (digital cinema). Does the media take it too far? Is digital technology killing the story, killing the idea behind it. This article "What Is Digital Cinema?" generated questions on aesthetics. Will this class and introduction to a new media compromise my aesthetics. Will I form a new aesthetics in visual media? How am I going to incorporate my current studio aesthetics into this media?

I hope to successfully complete one project in this class. I want to use digital photography, video, and animation to accompany my more traditional approaches of art making.
